I’ll be honest, I have a little bit of a soft spot for Costco. With my mom running a home based bakery, trips to Costco were frequent when I was a child. Things have changed a
little lot since then. The bakery was shut down years ago, and the irony of being on a gluten free diet after growing up in a bakery has not been lost on me.
While I’ve never personally had a need to buy 50lb sacks of flour, or yeast in larger containers than I buy my milk in, I have periodically purchased a Costco membership for my personal use. Their meat department is pretty decent, and I used to buy my antihistamines there before the generic version of it hit grocery stores. Once I hit my debt repayment phase however, the membership was scrapped.
The Boy and I were in one a couple months ago looking at new tires. While we were there, I noticed the price of gas at their gas bar was a full 4 cents lower than anywhere else in town. I could see filling up there when picking up other items, but was a 4 cent savings really worth buying a membership for?
Turns out it very well may be. Between driving to work, The Boy’s house and my other running around, I average approximately 60L of fuel every two weeks. Over the course of the year, that works out to 1560L of fuel. If I did all of my fuelling up at Costco, that would save me $62.40 over the course of the year. That’s approximately the cost of a new membership!
I’m not convinced I want to buy one for the gas discount alone. Unless I was buying other bulk items there as well, which I don’t often need to given that I live alone, I’d basically be limiting myself on where I can fuel up for very little benefit.
The Boy on the other hand should probably seriously consider it. His old truck went through approximately 100L of fuel a week (his new one is slightly more efficient). Over the course of the year, he would save approximately $208 by purchasing his fuel there, which more than pays for a membership.
Now that I think about it, I really shouldn’t be surprised that it requires a larger volume of fuel to make the membership a worthwhile purchase. It is a store that specializes in large quantities after all.
What do you guys think? Is it worth buying a membership for the gas savings? Or do you think you would end up spending your savings in the store?
